Timing Belt Replacements
A timing belt or timing chain is a very important component of your car’s engine. It synchronises the crankshaft’s rotation with the engine valves, allowing them to open and close at the correct times.
Whilst some vehicles have a timing chain, many have a timing belt, and this belt will deteriorate through usage or age so it needs to be replaced at scheduled intervals.
Every vehicle is different and some manufacturers will recommend replacing the timing belt every 40,000 kilometres and others can be every 100,000 kilometres or so many years. If the belt is not replaced, it may break and this will lead to bent valves and engine failure.
Many people baulk at the cost of replacing the timing belt, thinking it is only a belt – why should it cost so much. Each vehicle is different, but usually, to replace the timing belt it can be highly labour intensive as the front of the engine may need to be disassembled. When replacing the timing belt, the technician will also check the water pump and seals, and the timing belt tensioner and pulley and may recommend them to be replaced whilst all parts are disassembled.
All of this adds up but to not replace the belt can be detrimental and lead to an even bigger cost – a replacement engine.
